Okay, I’m probably the biggest idiot. So, I just got a phone call where some company was claiming that I won a chance to to be entered into a sweepstakes because I am a visa carrier. I’m skeptical of course. Then, the lady proceeds to tell me that they will ship a diamond watch to my house. Okay, now this was sketchy as hades. They were going to ship it to me college dorm but I, like an idiot, gave her my house address. Then, she started talking about magazine offers and what on and on. Then she asked me to verify the phone call with her boss, who was a complete jerk for lack of better word. When he asked me for my expiration date, i told him to cancel everything because I didn’t feel safe with going through it. He did not ask me for my credit card number or verification code. And, he didn’t have the name that’s on the card right either. My question is, do I need to cancel my card, even though he doesn’t have certain information?

On the back of your card is a number they are on 24/t and explain exactly what you just said. They can cancel card. There are more scams on the net DON”T do this little one. Call now.

No you dont have to cancel your credit card since you did not give him the number, expiration date or verification code. You came to your senses right on time.
Be careful in the future for the similar scams. Nobody gives anything free. By chance if you had entered some sweepstakes and you won, they should give you the prize without any cost to you. If you have to pay for shipping and handling and being asked to buy other things, you should know that it’s a scam.

Credit card companies sell your information to telemarketers. They don’t need the card number, because they already have it in the system. They usually just verify the last 4 numbers. You don’t need to cancel the card, but you need to call the credit card company and ‘opt out’ of any marketing by third parties.
I would also keep a close eye on your statements for unauthorized charges- just in case.
But that is a deal where you pay $3.50 or whatever a week for the magazines, to cover “shipping.” It’s a normal telemarketer call.

If you would feel better to cancel the card, then do it. You can also put it on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus. It has to be renewed every 90 days in order to keep it active. Better to be safe than sorry later.
